    Description

    PRESENTED IS A MAGNIFICENT SET OF NINE GILT SOLID SILVER PLATES CREATED
    FOR SIR ISAAC LYON GOLDSMID (1778-1859)-- THE FIRST NON-CONVERT ENGLISH
    JEW TO RECEIVE THE ENGLISH HEREDITARY TITLE OF HONOUR, 'THE BARONET', IN
    1841;
    1st. BART GOLDSMID WAS A PROMINENT LONDON BANKER AND FINANCIER. HE
    MARRIED HIS COUSIN IN 1808.
    GOLDSMID ESPOUSED LIBERAL CAUSES AND SOCIAL REFORM IN  CIVIL RIGHTS. HE
    DRAFTED THE 'JEWISH DISABILITY BILL' FIRST IN 1830 AND THEN IN 1833. HIS
    RELENTLESS DEVOTION TO THE CAUSE, PROVED  INSTRUMENTAL IN THE 'JEWISH
    EMANCIPATION' AND THE SUBSEQUENT RISE OF SUCH FIGURES OF THE FAITH
    AS LIONEL de
    ROTHSCHILD (THE FIRST MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, 1847) AND DAVID
    SALOMONS
    (THE FIRST LORD MAYOR OF LONDON, 1855);
    MOTIVATED BY THEIR BELIEF THAT A NON-ORTHODOX CONGREGATIONAL
    GOVERNANCE WOULD BE MORE ACCOMODATIVE OF JEWISH EMANCIPATION THAN
    THE SOCIALLY-STATIC CONGREGATIONS HELD AT BEVIS MARKS; THE
    MORE PROSPEROUS ASHKENAZI FAMILIES, HEADED BY GOLDSMID, FOUNDED THE
    WEST LONDON SYNAGOGUE OF BRITISH JEWS IN 1840;
    FURTHERMORE, GOLDSMID WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE
    UNIVERSITY OF LONDON (LATER, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON);
    THE GENTLEMENS MAGAZINE MAKES THE FOLLOWING REFERENCES TO GOLDSMID:
    23 AUGUST 1841, PAGE 311:
    THE QUEEN HAS BEEN PLEASED TO GRANT THE DIGNITY OF A BARONET TO THE FOLLOWING
    ...ISAAC LYON GOLDSMID OF St. JOHN's  LODGE, REGENTS PARK AND OF THE WICK , BRIGHTELMSTONE. Esq..., AND;
    6 JUNE 1846 (PART 2), PAGE 84:
    SIR ISAAC LYON GOLDSMID, BART. TO ACCEPT AND USE IN THIS COUNTRY THE
    TITLE OF BARON De GOLDSMID AND da PALMEIRA, WHICH THE QUEEN OF PORTUGAL
    HAS BEEN PLEASED TO CONFER UPON HIM IN MANIFESTATION OF THE IMPORTANT
    SERVICES RENDERED BY HIM ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS TO THE PORTUGESE NATION,
    AND ALSO TO BEAR CERTAIN ADDITIONAL ARMORIAL BEARINGS GRANTED TO HIM
    BY THE ROYAL DECREE OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN OF PORTUGAL.
    ISAAC's ELDEST SON, SIR FRANCIS HENRY GOLDSMID 2nd BARONET (1808-1878),
    WENT ON TO BECOME THE FIRST JEWISH BARRISTER IN ENGLAND AND WAS MADE
    QUEEN'S COUNSEL IN 1858. IN 1860, HE ENTERED THE PARLIAMENT AS MEMBER OF
    READING CONSTITUENCY, A POSITION HE HELD FOR THE REMAINDER OF HIS LIFE.
    THIS MAGNIFICENT SET OF NINE SILVER-GILT DESSERT PLATES WERE

    GARRARD TO THE POSITION OF CROWN JEWELERS,1843-- DISPLACING RUNDELL,
    BRIDGE & Co. THE GARRARD FIRM HAD EARLIER, 1830, BEEN APPOINTED AS
    ROYAL GOLDSMITHS TO KING WILLIAM IV;

    Our Guarantee:
    i-  We believe that Ebay's money back guarantee suffices to ensure our items' actual condition to correspond with the description provided  in the listing of the items. Hence, we feel any additional "return policy" would be redundant;
    ii- More importantly, however, to protect our clients against buying counterfeits as well as misrepresentations of provenance, we offer a unique , with
    guarantee of authenticity
    with no time-limit constraints.
    We feel a guarantee of authenticity provides ironclad protection to Ebay buyers; whereas, a "14, or even 30, day return policy" could fail miserably in many cases involving antique silver.
    Consider, for the sake of argument, the case of an unsuspecting buyer who spends over ,000 on a silver item posed as original on the pretext that it was acquired from the estate of a Russian family who had fled to Canada in the first quarter of the twentieth century.
    Upon receiving the item, the purchaser would inspect it for condition issues, and once satisfied would probably leave the seller a positive feedback comment.
    Months, if not years, later the purchaser decides to have the item appraised. It would be then that he/she finds out about the actual provenance of the item: an auction house whose description of the item explicitly mentions "bearing questionable marks" for a Faberge work-master.
